HopeWay is located at 1717 Sharon Road West in southwest Charlotte on a 20-acre wooded campus. The centerpiece is a 52,000 square foot building that was renovated and designed by Perkins + Will, an architecture firm specializing in design for behavioral health and therapeutic environments. A FEW MINUTES into a tour of HopeWay, the only mental health treatment center of its kind in North Carolina, Dee Grano speaks up. It’s a bright Thursday morning in early November, a few weeks before the south Charlotte facility is scheduled to open. Grano handles public relations for the facility, and our tour has landed in the center’s art therapy room. Instructor Marianne Huebner and HopeWay’s CEO and chief medical officer, Dr. Alyson Kuroski-Mazzei, are in the room, too.
About Our Behavioral Health Residential Facility
Blue was expecting a kind of way station between hospital and home, where patients could live if need be, continue their therapy and medication, and readjust to life. But the nearest treatment center for adults that offered those services was Skyland Trails in Atlanta. Blue, then an investment banking executive at Wells Fargo, was astounded.
Adult Mental Health Residential Program
The various living areas along the residential corridor provide a variety of spaces in which to spend time outside of the daily therapeutic programming. Four traditional yet comfortable and inviting group therapy rooms are used to provide evidence-based psychotherapy including cognitive-behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy with 9 – 12 clients per group. HopeWay offers non-denominational pastoral care options for clients primarily using the Faith Center and its rustic, calming space. This room is also an ideal setting for other holistic healing approaches such as yoga and mindfulness. Our experienced team uses a holistic, personalized approach to create a unique treatment plan for each client. The plan outlines the steps needed for clients to make a successful transition to the next stage of their recovery.

A certified art therapist leads art therapy activities in the uplifting and energizing Art Room that includes a kiln for clay work and pottery. Behavioral health programs in Charlotte have rarely, if ever, included art therapy as part of their treatment approach. Yet considerable scientific evidence supports the strong value that expressive and creative artistic activities provide clients struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. Our residential program offers a unique opportunity, where clients have a calm and therapeutic living environment that supports their treatment journey towards mental wellness and healing.
As many as 1 in 5 people are diagnosed with a mental health condition and the number continues to rise. Access to evidence-based mental health care is crucial and life-saving for many. Thanks to the support of our donors and community, we have served over 3,300 people from Charlotte and across the United States since we opened in November of 2017. HopeWay is committed to help meet the ever-growing mental health needs in our community and beyond.

Learn how Mack, a previous client here at HopeWay, regained his confidence and self love after overcoming major depressive disorder and anxiety. Private donors ended up contributing $27 million—including $2.5 million from Novant Health and $2 million from Carolinas HealthCare System—to support purchasing property and other start-up costs. A Realtor friend of Bill’s tipped him off to a 12.5-acre plot of land off Sharon Road West and a 52,700-square-foot former school building. The freshly established HopeWay Foundation bought the property and building last year for $5.5 million, part of which was raised through tax-free bonds.
